Florence County Economic Development Partnership To Launch Feasibility Study

The Florence County Economic Development Partnership will launch a study into the feasibility of a public academy for marksmanship, which would be open to law enforcement and private gun enthusiasts.

The study will look into whether the Pee Dee Regional Marksmanship Academy, the project’s current name, could be placed on an old Florence County dump off Paper Mill Road. The idea is to use public and private dollars to fund the construction on around 558 acres of land already owned by Florence County.

South Carolina Economic Outlook

The South Carolina Leading Index (SCLI) fell in June to a value (following revisions) of 102.37.  SCLI metrics were mixed in June. Unemployment claims were 25.0 percent higher than in May. The number of issued housing permits fell 11.3 percent month-over-month while valuation for the permits fell 8.2 percent. Average weekly manufacturing hours were up 2.4 percent. The Dow Jones Composite Average was up 6.4 percent.

South Carolina’s total non-seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment rose by 8,500 net jobs to 2,313,200 in June, which was 0.4 percent higher than May numbers and 3.8 percent higher than one year ago. Sectors reporting net job gains for the month included Leisure and Hospitality (6,100); Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (1,800); Finance (1,300); Other Services (1,200); Information (1,000); Manufacturing (100); and Natural Resources and Mining (100). Net job losses were reported in the Government (-3,900), Professional and Business Services (-2,400); and Construction (-2,200) sectors. Educational and Health Services had no net change month-over-month. Compared to one year ago, the state economy added 83,600 net nonfarm jobs.

Free Heirs’ Property And Land Use Seminar

On Thursday August 3, from 5:00 -6:00 PM, The Florence Section National Council of Negro Women is sponsoring a free Heirs’ Property and Land seminar that is open to the public. This public service seminar will take place at the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation public library located at 509 S Dargan Street in Florence, SC.

The seminar will be conducted by professional expert members of the Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation who will give the citizens of Florence information about their legal rights and the risks within the Heirs’ Property and Sustainable Forest Program. They will specifically discuss forestry education and services to help landowners know the value of managing their forestland for greater income and how to increase generational wealth from their property. The seminar will also offer information pertaining to legal education and direct legal services to help families reach agreements, clear title to family land, and probate estates.

Chamber’s Emerging Leaders Participate In Education and Leadership Development Session

The Florence Chamber’s Emerging Leaders Summer Institute held their Education and Leadership Development session on Wednesday, July 26th.

The class started the day with a dementia simulator and breakfast at The Eastern Carolina Community Foundation with Belle Zeigler. Then they toured the FMU Performing Arts Center which was hosted by Bud Simmons. Later the group moved on to tour the Florence County Museum.

The group also saw informative presentations from Hannah Davis with the City of Florence and Doris Lockhart, CEO of Spherion.
