Annual Membership Luncheon Scheduled For September 20

The Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce has announced its guest speaker for the 2023 Membership Luncheon set for Wednesday, September 20.

Jeff Deaton, Managing Director at AESC US., will address the more than 500 plus business and civic leaders who will attend the Chamber’s fall luncheon. In his role, Deaton is responsible for the US business operations for the facilities in Florence, SC, Bowling Green KY, and Smyrna, TN.

AESC is a global leader in developing next generation EV battery technology and will be opening operations here in Florence County soon. The AESC Florence site will support a partnership with BMW Group, supplying technology-leading battery cells for next generation electric vehicle models produced at BMW’s Spartanburg plant.

The event will also include the announcement and presentation of the Business Person of the Year, which is sponsored by Wells Fargo.

The luncheon will be held at the Florence Center, the doors will open at 11:30 a.m. and the program begin at noon. Registration is $40 for members, $50 for non-members and $475 for a special reserved table of 8.

The Naomi Project 17th Annual Lunch Scheduled For September 14th

Virtus Academy Announces High School Addition

Florence’s Virtus Academy announced last Thursday that the school has finalized a deal to purchase surrounding property and receive funds to build a high school facility with a gymnasium to serve the school’s students.

On Tuesday, August 22nd the school, acting through its board of directors, closed on the issuance of South Carolina Job Economic Development Authority Facilities Revenue Bonds in the amount of $13,890,000. The school selected Hubrich Contracting, Inc., which will begin construction on the high school in early September to open the facility for the 2024-2025 school year. The new high school building will be more than 28,000 square feet with a gymnasium that is about 12,000 square feet.

Florence 1 Gets Hands On With Engineering Activity Kits

Brockington Elementary school students were the first in Florence School District One to get hands-on with engineering activity kits donated by Honda.

The global car manufacturer, which has a factory in Timmonsville, donated 600 of the engineering kits to the school district at a short ceremony on Wednesday. Chris Rogers, director of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math program at Florence One Schools, said the kits will teach students about different types of engineering earlier than they otherwise would be taught.

All 4 Autism Featured On ChamberLink Radio

Jessica Brown, Executive Director of All 4 Autism, was on ChamberLink Radio this weekend to talk about increasing the awareness, resources and support for those of all ages with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The organization was a grassroots effort which started in 2005 by ASD families in the Florence area. The first Autism Resource Center for the Pee Dee opened on April 25, 2017.
